Taxation remains moderate compared with many European countries. The quality of life is attractive, and the Principality is only a few hours from France and Spain. However, in 2026, moving to Andorra is no longer simply a matter of renting an apartment, opening a bank account and benefiting from a tax rate capped at 10%. The requirements for settling in the country have evolved, and the authorities pay close attention to actual residence, the source of funds and the economic reality of new residents.

For a trader, several questions need to be addressed before moving. How will trading profits be classified? Which type of residence should you choose? Should you trade as an individual or set up a company? Do the brokers you use accept Andorran residents? And above all, how can you clearly demonstrate the origin of the capital accumulated over the years?

Why move to Andorra as a trader in 2026?

Taxation is obviously one of the first arguments that comes to mind. In 2026, the general personal income tax rate, known as IRPF, remains set at 10% in Andorra.

For income falling within the general tax base, however, the system includes mechanisms that make taxation more nuanced than a simple flat rate. According to official tax information, net income below €24,000 is not taxed within this base. Between €24,001 and €40,000, the tax credit mechanism results in an effective rate of 5% on the relevant portion, while the applicable rate above this threshold is 10%. For income falling within the savings tax base, a tax-free allowance of €3,000 applies before the 10% rate is applied.

However, beware of a common misconception! This does not mean that every trading transaction carried out by an Andorran resident is automatically taxed at 10%. Tax treatment depends on how the income is classified, the nature of the assets, how the activity is carried out and the taxpayer's personal circumstances. Shares, derivatives, interest, dividends, Forex and digital assets should not be treated as though they necessarily fall under the same tax regime.

Taxation of trading in Andorra: what you need to understand before moving

The 10% rate is a starting point, not a complete answer from a tax perspective. The Andorran tax system distinguishes between the general tax base and the savings tax base. Official documentation on IRPF includes certain categories of capital income as well as capital gains and losses within the latter. A trader's exact situation must therefore be assessed based on their transactions.

Consider two very different profiles. The first person invests their personal wealth, makes occasional trades and also holds long-term investments. The second carries out several hundred transactions a month and structures their entire professional activity around trading. Even if both individuals sometimes use the same financial instruments, their economic situations are not necessarily comparable.

Cryptoassets require the same degree of caution. It would be misleading to claim that they are systematically tax-exempt in Andorra. The Principality now has a much more structured tax and regulatory framework for digital assets. The classification of transactions and the taxpayer's circumstances must be assessed before determining the tax actually due.

For a trader with a substantial portfolio, carrying out a tax analysis before changing tax residence is far more useful than simply comparing the French and Andorran tax rates.

Becoming a genuine Andorran tax resident

There is a fundamental difference between holding a residence permit and being a tax resident. According to the criteria published by the Government of Andorra, an individual may be considered a tax resident if they spend more than 183 days during the calendar year in the Principality or if the main centre of their activities or economic interests is located there, directly or indirectly. The circumstances of a spouse and minor children may also be taken into account when assessing tax residence.

Obtaining an Andorran residence permit does not automatically mean that the French tax authorities will stop considering the individual a French tax resident. A home retained in France, family circumstances, professional activity, economic interests and the provisions of the France-Andorra tax treaty may all be relevant.

A credible expatriation involves genuinely moving your life to Andorra, rather than simply obtaining an administrative address.

Passive residence in Andorra: what is changing in 2026

For many years, a guarantee of €50,000 or €60,000, or an investment requirement of €600,000, was required to settle in Andorra without carrying out a gainful activity. These figures no longer accurately describe the requirements applicable to a new project in 2026.

Andorran regulations underwent another change with Law 2/2026 (Omnibus), which entered into force on 13 February 2026. The Government announced an increase in the initial investment linked to passive residence from €600,000 to €800,000 for property purchases, as part of the strengthening of immigration and investment requirements. The overall investment threshold in assets is set at a minimum of €1 million in Andorran assets to obtain passive residence. This change considerably increases the budget to be planned for a trader considering this route.

The year 2026 also marks a tightening of certain rules concerning foreign real estate investment. Since the new framework came into force, the tax on foreign real estate investment has notably increased from 3% to 6% for the acquisition of a first property and from 5% to 10% for the acquisition of a second home.

Active residence: a relevant option for some traders

Active residence follows a different logic. It applies to people who genuinely carry out professional or entrepreneurial activities in the Principality. For a trader wishing to set up a company, this option may make sense when the structure corresponds to a genuine economic activity. However, creating a company solely for the purpose of obtaining a tax advantage is not necessarily the best strategy. The first step is to determine what the company actually does.

A structure that manages its own capital should not be confused with a business providing financial services or managing third-party capital. As soon as an activity involves clients' money or regulated financial services, authorisation and compliance requirements take on an entirely different dimension. Setting up a company also involves accounting, reporting obligations and operating costs. The structure should therefore provide genuine economic value.

In 2026, the tightening of the conditions for settling in Andorra must be factored into the project from the outset. The Andorran authorities have introduced additional financial requirements for certain new residents and self-employed individuals. It is therefore essential to verify the exact conditions applicable to the permit being requested at the time of filing, rather than relying on figures from an older procedure.

How much do you need to earn to live in Andorra in 2026?

The Andorran minimum wage is a useful benchmark, particularly because certain administrative requirements and thresholds are calculated based on it. Since 1 January 2026, the statutory minimum wage has been set at €1,525.33 per month, equivalent to €8.80 per hour for a 40-hour working week.

For an expatriate trader, however, basing your calculations solely on the minimum wage would make little sense. Your actual budget will depend primarily on housing, your desired standard of living, your family situation, healthcare coverage, vehicles, professional expenses and the type of residence you choose.

You should also allow for a safety margin. Trading income is not always consistent: an excellent year may be followed by a much less favourable period. Building your personal budget around your best-performing months is therefore rarely a prudent approach.

Source of funds: probably the most important part of the process for a trader

This is an aspect that is often discovered too late. When an employee moves with several years of payslips and savings held in a traditional bank account, tracing the origin of their wealth is generally fairly straightforward. For a trader, the situation can be very different.

Imagine capital initially funded from a French bank account, transferred to several brokers, partially converted into cryptoassets, moved between different wallets and then transferred back several years later following significant appreciation. The wealth may be entirely legitimate while still being difficult to explain if supporting documents have not been retained.

Financial institutions apply KYC and anti-money laundering procedures. When a substantial amount reaches an account, the question is therefore not simply “how much do you own?”, but more importantly “can you demonstrate how this wealth was accumulated?” Bank statements, broker statements, previous tax returns, transaction histories, proof of purchases and sales, as well as records of transfers between wallets, can all become essential.

For a crypto trader, rebuilding this documentation before moving is generally much easier than having to do so urgently when a bank requests supporting evidence.

Can you continue using your broker from Andorra?

This is something you should check before moving. Andorra is located in Europe but is not a member of the European Union. The terms offered by some brokers to Andorran residents may differ from those offered to clients residing in France or Spain.

A trader may therefore find that one broker accepts their change of residence without difficulty, while another restricts certain products or simply does not serve the jurisdiction. For someone whose income depends on daily access to the markets, this is far from being a minor administrative detail.

Before officially changing your residence, it is advisable to contact each broker directly and ask whether Andorran residents are accepted, whether your existing account can be maintained, which supporting documents will be required and whether the available products will remain the same. The same precaution applies to crypto exchanges.

Andorran banks and trading: what should you expect?

Opening a bank account should also be prepared carefully. A trader with significant cash flows or transactions originating from multiple platforms may face more extensive documentation requests than an employee receiving their salary every month from the same company.

This does not necessarily mean that the bank refuses to work with traders. It reflects the customer due diligence and source-of-funds requirements that financial institutions are subject to. Preparing your file in advance can make the banking relationship considerably easier.

The documentation should allow the bank to quickly understand who you are, what your activity consists of, where your capital comes from, which brokers you use and why significant transactions appear on your accounts.

In this context, transparency is far more effective than seeking supposed absolute banking secrecy. In 2026, Andorra is integrated into international standards for financial cooperation and compliance. It would be outdated to present the Principality as a place where assets can be made invisible to foreign tax authorities.

Should you set up a company to trade in Andorra?

The answer depends on the project. For someone who only manages their personal wealth, automatically setting up a company is not necessarily necessary. For an organised economic activity, the analysis may be different.

The general Andorran corporate income tax rate has historically been set at 10%, but this figure alone is not enough to determine whether setting up a company is worthwhile. The director's remuneration, potential profit distributions, deductible expenses, the company's economic substance and the resulting administrative obligations must all be taken into account.

The analysis should begin with the actual activity rather than the tax rate. The appropriate legal structure is one that corresponds to what the trader actually does and how they intend to develop their activity over the coming years.

Trading cryptocurrencies from Andorra in 2026

Cryptoassets are probably the area where tax-related assumptions are most common. You should not assume that moving to Andorra automatically turns all crypto capital gains into tax-exempt income.

The tax treatment depends on the nature of the transactions and how they are classified for tax purposes. The Principality also publishes tax rulings specifically concerning transactions involving digital assets, which shows that these situations require genuine legal and tax analysis rather than a simplified rule.

For a cryptoasset holder, the banking aspect is almost as important as taxation. Someone who can document the initial purchase of their assets, their custody, subsequent exchanges and their eventual sale will have a much stronger file when they want to convert a significant portion of their portfolio into euros. Traceability becomes a genuine administrative asset.

Andorra or Dubai for a trader?

Comparing tax rates alone provides a very incomplete picture. Dubai and the United Arab Emirates can offer a particularly attractive personal tax environment, while Andorra still levies personal income tax. However, choosing a country in which to live for several years cannot be reduced to this difference.

For a French or European trader, Andorra has an obvious geographical advantage. Toulouse and Barcelona remain accessible within a few hours by road, and the time zone is naturally suited to European markets. Dubai, on the other hand, offers a much more international environment, a larger financial infrastructure and excellent connections with Asia.

The climate, housing costs, family life, residency, banking, taxation and lifestyle are sufficiently different that the best destination genuinely depends on the trader's profile.

Andorra or Switzerland?

Switzerland has a banking and financial sector on a completely different scale from Andorra. It can be particularly attractive for certain private investors, but Swiss taxation depends heavily on the canton and on how the activity is classified. A private investor and someone considered a professional trader may face different tax treatments.

Andorra has a more compact system and a relatively low general IRPF rate, but naturally offers a much smaller local financial market. A trader choosing between the two countries must weigh taxation, cost of living, access to financial services, residency and personal circumstances.

Andorra or Portugal in 2026?

Older comparisons still frequently present Portugal through the lens of the non-habitual resident regime, known as NHR, as though simply moving to the country were enough to benefit from the scheme's historical advantages for ten years. This is no longer an accurate description for a new expatriate in 2026.

The Portuguese regime has been substantially reformed, and the former NHR conditions are no longer the general reference for someone considering moving there today. Comparing Andorra in 2026 with Portugal as it was in 2020 leads to a misleading conclusion. Any tax comparison should use the schemes actually available to a new arrival at the time they are considering their move.

What is the quality of life like for a trader living in Andorra?

This is probably one of the Principality's most personal advantages. When you spend several hours a day looking at charts and screens, being able to end the day in the mountains, go skiing in winter or quickly head out for a hike can genuinely change your daily routine. Andorra offers a mountain environment, close access to nature and a lifestyle on a very different scale from that of Paris, London or Dubai.

However, this tranquillity comes with a trade-off: the country is small. For someone looking for a major metropolitan area, a constant nightlife or a huge financial ecosystem, Andorra may feel limited.

Housing has also become an important issue. Pressure on the property market has led the Government to significantly strengthen its policies in this area in 2025 and 2026, particularly by tightening the conditions applicable to certain foreign investments.

Living from trading in Andorra can be appealing.
